Whilst we are all ready to slam the book of 2020 shut, let's remember some of the good things about 2020. There is no doubt that 2020 has affected every single person's life in some way or another and we are all collectively feeling the effects inflicted throughout the world. But as we open the chapter on a new year, I wanted to make a list of some of the stories that made me happy in 2020.

We reconnected with family in friends

This year forced us to hit the brakes on lots of our endeavours, but a brilliant by-product was the amount of free time that we suddenly found ourselves with. Many of us hosted Zoom quizzes, spent lots of time at home with the family and finally found the time to pick up the phone and rekindle some old friendships. This year allowed us to be grateful for the people in our lives, our rocks to hold on to, and going into 2021 we hopefully won't take our loved ones for granted.

Kamala Harris became the first female Vice President-Elect

We all watched with bated breath as a record-breaking 104 million Americans cast their votes. The outcome lit a beacon of hope inside of us as the daughter of two immigrant parents, Kamala Harris, became the first ever female vice resident-elect. When you trawl through the USA's dark past, you realise that there was a time where this would have felt like an unachievable feat. During a year with so many twists and turns, Kamala's election win inspired a renewed hope for change in many.

An International Feature Film won an Academy Award

Parasite, a Korean film broke a record by becoming the first-ever international feature film to win the Academy Award for ‘Best Picture.’ Here's to many more in the future!

Carbon Emissions Dropped

Yes, the pandemic played a role here. But, the global carbon emission rate dropped by a staggering 7% this year. Pollution and fog was reduced so much that, stars were visible to the naked-eye in big cities for the first time in many years. These statistics are proof that we can do a 180 on climate change before it's too late.

The most incredible healthcare success story happened – we took a vaccine from concept to market in less than 12 months, this normally takes more in the reach of a decade. There is now hope that the approval of these vaccines will mark the beginning of the end to this pandemic.

SpaceX launched Crew Dragon

Elon Musk's company SpaceX sent two Americans into orbit from US soil for the first time in almost 10 years. This event on May 30th 2020 also marked the first ever space flight launched by a private company – don't quote me on this one, but I sense space travel for the average me could be a thing in a decade or two.

New Found Hobbies

We found the time to get started on new side-projects or rekindle old passion projects. Many benefitted in return. Entire startups and charities have sprung up in record speeds to help with the pandemic in ways other than medical, for example, many tech startups solving the various problems that come with WfH. As for the rest of us, some of us baked, picked up a book for the first time, or learnt how to code. This is quite a personal one for me as I used my time to create content online and kick-start my YouTube journey.
